Your complete guide to getting started in Ball x Pit
What is Ball x Pit?
Ball x Pit is a roguelike brick-breaking game developed by Kenny Sun and published by Devolver Digital. Released in 2025, it combines classic brick-breaking gameplay with modern roguelike mechanics, offering unique characters, powerful ball evolutions, and strategic depth.
Each run is different, with randomized ball drops, evolution opportunities, and challenging enemies. Your goal is to survive waves of enemies, evolve your balls, and defeat powerful bosses.
Core Mechanics
Understanding the basics
Ball Shooting
Aim and shoot balls to break bricks and defeat enemies. Each ball has its own damage, cooldown, and special effects. Managing your ball arsenal is key to success.
Evolution System
Combine basic balls to create powerful evolution balls. Evolutions require specific materials (other balls) and provide significant stat boosts and new abilities. Check the Evolutions page to see all recipes.
Character Abilities
Each character starts with a different ball and has unique stats. Some excel at early game, others shine in late game. Explore the Characters page to find your playstyle.
Progression
Win runs to unlock new characters, discover new balls, and master evolution recipes. Each victory makes you stronger and opens up new strategic possibilities.
Choosing Your First Character
Beginner-friendly options
As a beginner, we recommend starting with these characters:
Iron Fool
S Tier
High HP and defense make Iron Fool very forgiving for beginners. Starts with the Iron ball, which has solid damage and is a key material for several strong evolutions.
The Pitling
B Tier
Balanced stats and straightforward gameplay. Great for learning the game mechanics without overwhelming complexity. Available from the start.
Lantern Knight
A Tier
Good all-around character with the Light ball. Offers a nice balance between offense and defense, making it easier to learn while still being competitive.
Early Game Strategy
Your first 10 minutes
1
Focus on Survival
Don't try to optimize too early. Learn enemy patterns and focus on staying alive. Winning is better than having a "perfect" build that dies on stage 3.
2
Collect Basic Balls
Accept most ball drops you find early on. Having variety gives you more evolution options later. You can always replace weaker balls once you get evolutions.
3
Plan Your First Evolution
Look for easy evolutions like Magma (Burn + Iron) or Holy Laser (Light + Light). These are straightforward to obtain and provide a significant power spike.
4
Don't Ignore Items
Items and buildings provide passive bonuses that stack up over time. Even "boring" defensive items can be the difference between winning and losing.
5
Learn from Failure
Dying is part of the learning process. Pay attention to what killed you and adjust your strategy. Each run teaches you something new about the game.
